About English 9
The ninth-grade student will be able to make planned oral presentations independently and in small groups, with attention to the accuracy of evidence and the effectiveness of delivery. The student will continue to apply knowledge of word origins, derivations, and figurative language to extend vocabulary development in authentic texts. The study of both classic and contemporary literature will enhance the student’s appreciation of language arts as he/she develops the ability to read, comprehend, and analyze a variety of literary texts including narratives, narrative nonfiction, poetry, and drama. Students will also read and analyze a variety of nonfiction texts, citing textual support. The student will be able to produce, analyze, and evaluate auditory, visual, and written media messages. Grammar development will continue through the application of self- and peer-editing of writing for correct grammar, capitalization, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, and paragraphing. The student will develop narrative, expository, and persuasive writings for a variety of audiences and purposes through the use of print, electronic databases, online resources, and other media. The student will also use these resources to create a research product.
